Moroccan Trilobites: Discover Our Prehistoric Fossils
Trilobites are among the most fascinating fossils to collect. These marine arthropods lived in Earth's oceans for over 270 million years, from the Cambrian Period until their extinction at the end of the Permian, around 252 million years ago.
With their distinctive segmented bodies, intricate exoskeletons and incredible variety of shapes, trilobites offer a glimpse into ancient underwater worlds. Morocco is one of the most important sources of trilobite fossils, renowned for its rich fossil deposits and the remarkable variety of specimens discovered there.
At Lapid Art, we stock several types of Moroccan trilobite, each with its own distinctive features and appeal.
Our Moroccan Trilobite Fossils

Hollardops
Hollardops is a particularly striking trilobite from Morocco's Devonian rocks, dating to approximately 419–359 million years ago. It has a broad head shield, a segmented body and a flared tail, giving it a distinctive appearance.

Reedops
Reedops is another recognisable Devonian trilobite from Morocco. Its rounded head, large eyes and clearly segmented body give it a classic trilobite appearance. Reedops is an excellent example of the marine arthropods that thrived in ancient seas.

Harpetidae
Harpetidae is a family of trilobites known for its unusual head shields, which often have broad, flared margins and distinctive fringed edges. These adaptations give harpetid trilobites a very different appearance from the more familiar rounded forms.
Phacops
Phacops is a well-known group of trilobites, particularly famous for its large, compound eyes. These eyes were made up of numerous tiny visual units, allowing the animal to detect movement and changes in light in its marine environment. Moroccan specimens commonly come from Devonian deposits, preserving the distinctive head and body features that make phacopid trilobites so recognisable.

Paralejurus
Paralejurus is a distinctive trilobite found in Devonian deposits of Morocco. It typically has a broad, flattened appearance, with a relatively smooth, rounded outline and a clearly defined segmented body. Its elegant shape contrasts with the more heavily ornamented trilobites.
Why Is Morocco So Famous for Trilobite Fossils?
Morocco is renowned for its trilobites because it contains extensive fossil-rich sedimentary rocks that preserve evidence of ancient marine ecosystems. Many of these deposits date to the Devonian Period, when much of the region was covered by warm seas. These rocks contain an extraordinary diversity of marine fossils, including numerous trilobite groups.
