This is a question we’re asked quite often and the answer is not all crystals can go in water. Some crystals can dissolve, become damaged, or even release toxic substances when submerged in water. Which is why its really important to research before putting your crystals in water, as I know some of you like to use water as a cleansing aid.
Crystals that should NOT go in water, these crystals are either too soft, soluble, or contain toxic elements.
Mangano Calcite, Malachite, Iron Pyrite
Selenite, Calcite & Lepidolite
These crystals are super soft & can dissolve in water over time, its not recommended to have them near or in water
Malachite, Azurite & Galena
These crystal can become toxic and release harmful substances in water due to the copper and lead found within in crystal.
Pyrite & Hematite
These crystals contain metals and can corrode or rust when placed in water for periods of time.
As a general rule if a crystal has a Mohs hardness of 5 or lower or ends in ‘ite’ it’s likely to be unsafe in water, always double check if you’re unsure.
Amethyst, Flower Agate, Unakite Jasper
All Quartz Crystals
Amethyst, Citrine, Rose Quartz etc are all water safe crystals, they will not become damaged or toxic in water.
All Agate Crystals
Botswana Agate, Snakeskin Agate, Blue Lace Agate etc are safe to be placed in water for short periods of time and will no be damaged.
All Jasper Crystals
Unakite Jasper, Red Jasper, Dalmatian Jasper etc are water safe as all Jasper is above 6 on the Mohs scale.
Most crystal over 6 on the Mohs scale are water safe.
If you are still unsure, there are other ways of cleansing your crystals rather than using water, check out our other post ‘how to cleanse your crystals’
Hope this helps,
